Tennessee gets a new budget
The Tennessee General Assembly has passed Gov. Bill Haslam's recommended $32.4 billion budget after defeating Democratic efforts to restore planned teacher and employee pay raises scrapped because of revenue shortfalls. Democratic Leader Craig Fitzhugh, charged that Republicans are "going to balance [the budget] on the workers of this state." So Fitzhugh offered an amendment to provide funding to restore the originally proposed salary boosts of two percent if revenues increase. But Republican Leader Gerald McCormick, called the plan a "gimmick". In the House the budget was approved by a 68 to 27 vote, with two Republicans voting against the measure and only one Democrat for it. In the Senate, the budget was approved by a 28 to 3 margin.
