Cocke County NJROTC wants increased fine arts credits
The Cocke County School Board meeting Thursday evening heard from Senior Chief Mark Boesh of the NJROTC program at Cocke County High. He reported that the program currently has 178 students enrolled, compared to 78 when the program was established in 2003. The program has been designated a distinguished unit and state champion in seven of it's 11 years. This weekend for the fifth time, the local students will participate in a national championship. Last year graduating cadets earned $496,000 in scholarships, and students in the program have provided more than 38,000 Community Service hours. But the program is experiencing an increased drop-out rate by sophomore students after their first semester, because after that time there is no provision for the students to earn additional credits. Boesh proposed a modification in the graduation requirements to give students increased credits. He proposed that students be allowed to earn fine arts credit for participating in parades, color guard, drills and honor guards. Boesh said band members already can earn such credits and he called on the board to seek approval for such credit from state education officials. Board members did approve a request from Cosby students Caley Williamson and Bethanie Williams who want to start an environmental club at their school. The Green Eagles will teach students the value of the environment and it's importance to the local community. "Our goal is to raise awareness about both local and global affairs," they told the board. The program will create and operate a recycling program at the high school, pick up litter, provide needed landscaping, and assist other environmental groups. In other action, the board agreed to apply for acceptance of three special courses from the state Department of Education. If approved by Nashville, a Leadership course will be offered at Cocke County High School, and classes in Mythology and Appalachian Literature will be offered at Cosby High.
