Women injured in deck collapse
Two women required hospital treatment for non-threatening injuries when a deck attached to a Cocke County home collapsed Saturday morning. Three adult women and an adolescent female were on the 20' X 20' foot deck when it collapsed just after 10am. Lisa Morgan, Green Acres Drive, Newport, said she was walking her mother, 80 year-old Roberta Griffith, who recently had been released from the hospital, when the collapse occurred. "It just cracked and slowly gave way. The next thing I knew we were all on the ground," Morgan said. The occupants slid to the ground when one corner of the 12 foot high deck gave way. The incident caused a natural gas leak, but no fire resulted before Cocke County firemen turned off the gas flow. Ms. Griffith along with Sandra Barth, 56, were transported to Newport Medical Center by First Call EMS, however neither sustained serious injuries. The others on the deck were not injured. Agencies who responded included the Cocke County Sheriff's Department, Newport Rescue Squad, Cocke County Fire Department and Jefferson-Cocke Gas Utility District.
