Dillard provides law enforcement update Law enforcement agencies from throughout the Lakeway Region, gathered Wednesday in Morristown for a meeting of the Governor's Highway Safety program. Steve Dillard, Law Enforcement Laison for the program announced that Cocke County Administrative Captain Derrick Woods has been appointed Network Coordinator to assist in promoting various events. Officer Woods said the appointment "is a good opportunity for me and the Cocke County Sheriff's Department." According to Dillard, 85 percent of Tennesseans currently use their seatbelt but the 15 percent who do not, lead to the high motorist fatality rate in the state. As a result seatbelt enforcement is the primary goal of the Safety program this year. As of Tuesday this week, Tennessee had recorded 228 fatalities, or 17 fewer deaths than in 2013. In the Fall Branch District, 30 deaths have been reported, three fewer than last year. But Dillard went on to say "the summer months are killers." He announced that the program will give away three new, fully-equipped Ford Interceptors this year, in random drawings of those departments who participate in the program's Law Enforcement Challenge. It is an innovative program designed to stimulate traffic law enforcement activities by targeting three major traffic safety priorities: occupant protection, impaired driving, and speeding. The Law Enforcement Challenge provides law enforcement agencies with an opportunity to make a significant difference in the communities they serve by learning from one another and establishing goals in traffic safety enforcement and education. “It’s not about the tickets being written, it’s the fact that we’re trying to save lives. We want people to obey the laws, wear their seat belts, and we know with the warm weather coming on more people are going to get out on the roads. And with the warm weather more people also drink and drive. Please don’t drink and drive, or text and drive….if you are gonna drink, have a designated driver,” Dillard said.
