CLB discusses roof repair
The Cocke County Legislative Body ( CLB ) meeting Monday evening spent some time talking about the time frame of the recent repairs to the courthouse annex roof. Commissioner Robert Green has been critical of the procedure followed by County Mayor Vaughn Moore in making the repairs. Last evening he disputed earlier reports that the roof needed repair because of damage by buzzards. "It was worn out," Green said. Mayor Moore said he obtained estimates from three roofers, because of the leaking roof. He said he was concerned that the new carpet would be ruined if the repairs were not done and he wanted the repairs made before the new election machines were delivered. So the mayor said he made the decision to have the work done by Dixie Roofing who Moore said had previously done roof work for the county. Green said the County Technical Assistance Service ( CTAS ) told him the commission should have been asked for it's OK before the job was done. But the mayor said state auditors reviewed the procedure and found no problems. "Every decision I made was in the best interest of the taxpayers," added the mayor." You raised the issue and I appreciate it because I want to do what's right," he told the commissioner. The body then voted to fund the $47,990 roof repair with collections from the litigation tax. Members also agreed to apply for a litter grant, the re-appointment of Dan Metcalf to the Economic Development Commission and David E. Manes to the Beer Board replacing Bill Lewis. They also appointed Beth Freeman, Gray Sparks, George Ailshie and Gay Webb to the Cocke County Equalization Board, with Bill Gregg and Joe Hembree as alternates. The body also approved 2012 delinquent property taxes totaling more than $612,000 turned over by Trustee Rob Mathis to Circuit Court Clerk Peggy Lane for collection. Commissioner Clayton "Skip" Ellison reported that the county fire department has received 50 smoke detectors which will be installed for low income elderly. Mayor Moore reminded the commissioners of several planned events in the county; - the renaming of the Newport Animal Shelter for Dr. Carol Hood is planned for 4:30 p.m. today. - the Community Corrections Partnership Committee will meet at 5pm Thursday where the issue of ankle bracelet monitoring as an alternative to incarceration, will be addressed. - Music of the Mountains is scheduled for 2p.m. Sunday at the Smoky Mountains Visitors Center in Cosby. Admission is $4.00. - the National Day of Prayer is planned for the Cocke County High School at 6p.m. on May 1. - the Moonpie Festival is planned for the Cocke County Fairgrounds on May 10.
