Self charged with rape
A Newport man faces rape charges in connection with alleged sexual activity with a female aquaintance. The charge was lodged by Cocke County Detective Bryan Murr based on allegations made by the 29 year-old female. The woman said she had stayed at the home of Philip Todd Self, 39, Fairfax Road, Newport, in late March when she, the defendant and the defendant's wife argued. Self then allegedly told the victim to undress and according to her, she was afraid she would be assaulted and so she complied, and was sexually assaulted The victim says she went home but later returned to the home of the defendant, where she was again ordered to undress and was sexually assaulted. The woman said she had gone to the home out of fear that Self would assault his wife. On another occasion the victim says she was on the bed while Self and his wife had intercourse but she declined to have sex with him at that time.
