Miller pleads to charges stemming from police pursuit
A Newport woman who led police on a chase in August, of last year, resolved her case Wednesday with a guilty plea in Cocke County Circuit Court. On August 18, Anita Miller,51, Woodside Drive, was pursued from North Street to the 411 mile marker of Interstate 40, in Jefferson County where she crashed her car. Asst. Prosecutor Tonya Thornton told Judge Ben Hooper that Miller was driving with her emergency flashers on as she traveled westbound on West Highway 25/70 partially on the shoulder of the roadway. She then changed speed erratically between 60 and 100 miles per hour as she traveled westbound on I-40. The defendant was nearly stopped when she was boxed in by the officers, but then she took off at a high rate of speed around the cruisers, went into the median, struck a concrete culvert, and as the car rolled it struck a tree. Deputies estimated Miller was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash. She was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected onto the grass median and later was flown to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville. When she appeared in the courtroom, the defendant was seated in a wheelchair. Miller pleaded guilty to evading arrest, reckless driving and driving on a suspended license, and a number of other charges were dismissed. The defendant also pleaded guilty to writing two worthless checks over $1,000. The plea agreement provides for a sentence of three years, however Miller will serve just 45 days before she is placed on probation. She also will undergo alcohol, drug and mental health assessments, pay restitution of $100 and loose her driving privileges for one year.
