Blue Cross wants to hike premiums
BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee wants to raise rates by an average of 19 percent according to documents filed with the state of Tennessee. At the same time Cigna wants an increase of 7.5 percent, and Humana wants an increase of 14.4 percent. BlueCross has 88 percent of the federal Marketplace members in Tennessee and spokesman Roy Vaughn says the rate increases will "allow the company to break even". Vaughn says the increases are needed because more patients who signed up for health care were sicker than insurance companies expected and use more health services than predicted. BlueCross says it's policy holders will experience a rate increase ranging from 6.1 percent to 21.7 percent, depending on the coverage. Before the Affordable Care Act went into effect, insurance companies could refuse to write policies for those who had an existing medical issue. They now must provide coverage for all consumers.
