Webb to ask to be re-districted
Write-ins and district modifications are creating a headache for the Cocke County Election Commission There have been concerns with regard to what names will be accepted for the four write-in candidates in the upcoming August 7 election. Now the commission has decided to accept "Fud" as a write-in vote for Jeff "Fud" Ball, a candidate for County Mayor. In addition the body agreed to accept the last names of the write-in candidates, as legitimate votes. In addition to Ball, the write-in candidates are; Vaughn Moore for County Mayor, Carroll Crumbly for Fourth District Constable and Ronnie Hommel, candidate for Second District County Commissioner, Post 1. New district lines were re-drawn and put in place by the Cocke County Legislative Body in October, 2011, based on the 2010 census. Election Administrator Joyce Slagle says nearly 1,000 residents were moved to another precinct, and more than 400 were moved to a different district. The redistricting is required under state law to maintain a balance of residents in all districts. Recently Heather J. Webb qualified as a candidate for the school board from District Four, but it develops she lives in District Six, and would legitimately be a candidate in that district. She was told one side of New Cave Church Road is in the Sixth District and the other in the Fourth District. "This is something that happened 24 years ago that was never put into place, and it was never caught until after I had qualified to run in the Fourth District. I've lived here for 18 years and have always voted in the Fourth District....there has never been a question," the candidate said. Huff was told the election office recently received communication from the state comptroller which showed she lives in the Sixth District. She says she will ask the Cocke County Legislative Body this evening to move her to District Four so she can run for the position. "It's my understanding it happened back in 1990 and nothing was ever done about it, and nobody was ever notified. My house wasn't here at the time but the residents who were affected were never notified. I think it involves 12 to 15 people, in seven homes. So I will ask the CLB to ignore the line and put us all back into the district where we have always been," Webb said.
