Tony Williams denied bond reduction
Two men associated with the Brandon Williams case were in Cocke County Circuit Court this week. Brandon of Newport was ten years old in August, 2011 when he was attacked by two dogs who tore off the boy's ears. The owners of the dogs, Anthony Lugar and Jennifer Switzer, pleaded guilty to a charge of allowing dogs to run at large resulting in serious injury. Lugar, 25, Branch Drive, Newport, was in court on a charge he violated his probation in the case. Judge Rex Henry Ogle ordered the defendant to serve 120 days in jail and have his probation extended by a year. Also in court was Brandon's father, Tony Williams, 47, Blazer Street, Newport, who is charged with aggravated arson, three counts setting fire to personal property and coercion of a witness, in a May 17 fire which destroyed vehicles owned by John S. and Leslie Jones on Pikeview Street in Newport. The damage allegedly totals more than $60,000. Defense Attorney Charlotte Leibrock asked that Williams' bond of $500,000 be reduced, saying the defendant had a place to live and a job to go to. Asst. D. A. Brownlow Marsh put on testimony which indicated a recorded conversation in the Cocke County Jail which involved threats toward a witness in the case. He also argued that the Jones couple oppose a lowered bond saying they fear for their safety. Judge Ogle pointed to Williams' prior convictions including a ten year sentence for arson in 2001. The court denied a reduction in bond based on Williams' history, the testimony of threats, and the need to guarantee the safety of the community.
