IRS scam
Authorities are warning residents of a scam by individuals posing as representatives of the Internal Revenue Service. On Wednesday Lillie Mae Sartain of Cocke County told Deputy Jonathan Ball that she received a phone call from a man who identified himself as a "IRS cop." He said Sartain owed $1,000 and she had an hour to come up with $1,025. He said if the money was not produced within two hours, Sartain would be arrested. The male caller said Sartain had made a mistake in her tax filing several years ago and owed the money. Ms. Sartain told the caller she would not pay the money based on a phone call, so the male said she would be jailed and hung up.
