Cocke County Corrections Partnership The Cocke County Corrections Partnership Committee met Thursday evening. Mayor Vaughn Moore reported he met with Allen Hawk of USDA Rural Development about the possibility of development grants for a solution to the county's current courthouse and jail overcrowding. The mayor also met with and architect regarding the next steps in the pursuit of grant funding and the identification of an appropriate site. Corrections Lt. Anthony Horn talked about a recent visit to the new Fentress County Jail. He stressed the importance of constructing a facility with pods so expansion in the future is easier. The committee was told an expanded facility also likely will require additional personnel. Several area counties built new jails and were not able to utilize them because of inadequate staffing. Horn said another concern is the issue of safety while insuring security. Many facilities now are using video equipment to hold hearings in the detention facility itself. Circuit Court Judge Ben Hooper said he currently is seeing 1,200 defendants annually, double the number six or eight years ago. The judge said he wants to see an emphasis on curtailing drug sage in the jail because "drug abuse in the jail defeats the purpose for incarceration." The committee plans to visit the new jail in Coffee County in the near future.
