Underaged alcohol sales
Officers of the Newport Police Department along with Agents of the Tennessee Alcohol Beverage Commission, utilizing a 19 year-old cooperating witness, Thursday conducted an underage compliance check on 28 businesses in Newport. Newport Chief of Police Maurice Shults said the businesses that were checked, have either a beer sales permit or a state liquor license and beer sales permit. The investigation involved the under-aged male attempting to buy an alcoholic beverage. Of the 28 businesses checked, three convenience stores and one package store made sales to the cooperating witness. Chief Shults said the compliance check resulted in the charges of sale of an alcoholic beverage to an underage customer, for four individuals. Those charged are residents of Newport: Julie Kyker of Newport Package Store, Cosby Highway Lavoda Finchum of Eastport Market on East Broadway Rose Gregg of Moe Mart on West Highway 25/70. Jessica McNealy of Ford’s Cruz Thru on West Broadway. In addition, Kyker, the owner of the package store was also given a compliance citation by Agents of the Alcohol Beverage Commission. “We are pleased with those licensees that were diligent to check for identification and refuse the sales,” the chief said. “We hope that all of the licensed vendors will continue to make every effort to stop the sale of alcoholic beverages to underage customers.”
