Cody shooting
Cocke County authorities say they believe a Sunday afternoon shooting incident was accidental. Deputy Lt. C.J. Ball said he responded to the report of a shooting on Lane Drive, Newport at 1:39 pm., to find 18 year-old McKinley Cody lying on his back. The officer said Cody had called 911 and his mother, Kathy Cody, to say he had been shot, but at the scene did not remember how he had been shot. A .22 caliber rifle was found on the ground about 16 feet from the victim on the back lawn of his home. Detective Kevin Benton said the weapon was found on a trail leading from the lawn of the Cody home to a field. Hospital personnel said the weapon was against the victim when it discharged, striking his torso. "Evidence indicates that the shooting was not intentional but was self-inflicted, accidental in nature," the officer says . He adds that Indications are that Cody was walking to an area to fire the weapon, with tall grass and limbs lying on the ground. "He possibly fell on the weapon and it accidentally fired," the detective says. The teen was transported to the National Guard Armory and from there was flown by medical helicopter to the U.T. Medical Center in Knoxville where at last report he was in stable condition.
