Snapped pole knocks out power, phone, Internet and cable
About 340 homes and businesses in the Morristown Highway area of Cocke County lost power, and much of Cocke County lost cellphone, cable TV and Internet service Thursday from 3 pm to 5:30 pm. Trooper Tyler Hall said low hanging power lines over Highway 25E, got caught by a passing Lakeway Pallet tractor trailer and resulted in a pole being snapped by the strain. The officer says he doesn't know why the lines sagged allowing them to be caught by the rig. Engineer Jimmy Robertson said Newport Utilities crews responded to find the pole down in the road and the truck entangled in the power lines. Some of the power lines remained energized for several minutes after the initial accident at 3:15 pm. NU employees shut off the power, cleared up the broken pole, installed a new pole and restrung the wires to restore power. Traffic was stopped for an extended period until the highway could be cleared of power lines and debris. Later one lane was opened as repair work continued with another extended traffic stop later while conductors were installed. At 9 pm, some of the communication wires still had not been repaired. Trooper Hall said the operator of the rig, Dustin Rhinebolt, 32 of Newport was not injured in the incident.
