Thursday incident could have been serious Newport Utilities Engineer Jimmy Robertson said Friday it was fortunate that there were no injuries in connection with a downed power line on Highway25E, late Thursday afternoon. A Lakeway Pallet rig caught a line that was sagging across the highway, snapping off the utility pole and leaving a live wire wrapped around the truck. The incident also knocked out power, phone, Internet and cable service to a large number of residents. But Robertson said he initially failed to emphasize the fact that no injuries resulted from the incident. " It occurred to me how much more serious this outage could have been. For several minutes, there was a live wire on the ground and wrapped around the tractor trailer. There was great potential for someone to be seriously injured by making contact with a hot line. However, that did not happen because the operator of the truck stayed inside his vehicle and the drivers of the next vehicles to arrive at the scene did so as well. Everyone avoided contacting the wires. " He said law enforcement kept traffic stopped and away from the downed lines. Additionally, law enforcement personnel along with employees of TDOT helped control traffic through the accident/work site as the road was cleared and the lines repaired. " It could have been a lot worse, but with the teamwork of all involved, the downed lines remained just a power outage with a small traffic jam. Knowing what to do and staying clear of the downed lines kept a potential tragedy from occurring," says Robertson.
