Backhoe recovered in Cocke County
Cocke and Greene County authorities are working to determine who stole a $100,000 backhoe which was recovered in Cocke County last week. Cocke County Sheriff's Administrative Captain Derrick Woods said Monday, the 2011 Case was stolen from Glen Hills Utility District in Greene County on August 23. Two days later, utility employees were searching for the piece of equipment when they reportedly spotted it in the driveway of a home on Gunter Corner Road in the Parrottsville community. "Upon locating the backhoe, someone at the residence fired a handgun at the individuals with the utility district," Captain Woods said, however no injuries resulted. Law officers then responded to the scene, however they could not make contact with anyone at the home, and the backhoe had been moved. "The Tennessee Highway Patrol helicopter responded to the area, because we were dealing with alot of property. Several hundred yards from the residence, in a field behind a wooded area, the helicopter located the backhoe," the detective said. Two owners of the property gave consent for the officers to enter the area and recover the backhoe which was intact except for a damaged ignition. No arrest has been made in the theft or the gunfire. Detective Woods said several witnesses have been interviewed, however authorities do not believe the property owners were involved in the incident. When the investigation is completed, Detective Woods says the results will be turned over to prosecutors.
