Teen injured in school bus/pickup collision
One student was injured in a Monday afternoon collision involving a Cocke County school bus and a pickup truck. The 17 year-old female, a student at Cosby High School, complained of head and shoulder injuries and was taken by First Call EMS to the Newport Medical Center for treatment. Trooper Randy Spurgeon said the 3:40 pm collision occurred on Big Creek Road, near Pigeon Valley Baptist Church, in the Grassy Fork community. The officer said Randall Scott Ball, 37, Mack Caldwell Road, Newport, was operating a 1998 Toyota pickup which crossed the center line in a curve during a heavy rainstorm. It crossed from the southbound lane into the path of a northbound 2007 Thomas school bus operated by Robin W. Girard, 45, Chocolate Way, Newport. Trooper Spurgeon said the bus had moved to the right as far as possible in an attempt to avoid the collision, but was struck at the left front wheel by the pickup. "There was no speed involved but the road was very slick, it was in a curve and on a downhill grade," the officer told the NewsSource. The 14 other students on the bus were transported home by a second bus. Both vehicles involved in the collision sustained heavy damage and had to be towed from the scene. A school bus inspector with the Tennessee Department of Safety is expected to inspect the bus today.
