Styles/McGhee shooting A Saturday accidental shooting sent a Newport coupe to the hospital. Samuel Styles, 22, of Smith Street, told Newport Sgt. Matthew Elliott that he was lying in bed with his girlfriend, just before 8 am when he picked up his 40 caliber handgun to check it, pulled back the slide and the weapon discharged. Styles called 911 to report he had shot his girlfriend, Cassandra McGhee, 33. Investigator Detective Derrick Webb determined the weapon discharged accidentally, with the bullet striking Styles in the left thigh, traveling through the right thigh of the female and ultimately lodging in the bottom of the box spring on the bed. First Call EMS transported both of the injured to the Newport Medical Center, and later Ms. McGhee was transferred to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville, in stable condition. No charges were filed.
