Grassy Fork crash claims one life
Investigators do not know the time of a Tuesday morning crash in Cocke County which claimed the life of a Hamblen County woman. Trooper Sgt. Jason Andes of the Tennessee Highway Patrol identified the victim as Regina B. Reed, 28 of Morristown. The wreckage of Reed’s 1993 Ford pickup was discovered at 9:30 am off the Old 15th. Road near the Coggins Road intersection, in the Grassy Fork community. Trooper Sgt. Andes said the pickup was westbound when it left the roadway on the right side. Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes who responded to the scene told the NewsSource the pickup went down a 15 foot embankment. “It was a very, very unfortunate incident that involved a vehicle going off the right shoulder of the roadway down the embankment. It hit several trees and then came to rest on it’s roof in a creek with heavy damage. The victim was ejected and pinned underneath the vehicle. She had been there an unknown amount of time.” Sgt. Anders said Reed was not wearing a seat belt but a seat belt would have made a difference. Although there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol being a contributing factor, such a test has been ordered as is routine in fatal crashes. Cocke County deputies said Reed had been to the home of her boyfriend who reportedly lives in the area of the crash. The Newport Rescue Squad, Grassy Fork Volunteer Fire Department and Hartford Towing responded to the scene to assist in freeing the body of the victim, which was transported to the Newport Medical Center. Later Tuesday evening, two individuals were flow to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, following crash on South Highway 321. Cocke County Lt. Chris Gregg said Jacqueline Ballinger, 32, Old Highway 32, Newport operating a 1999 Ford Explorer, crossed into the path of a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, operated by Brad McCarter, 22, Monte Vista Road, Cosby at 8:10 pm. "He swerved to avoid a collision and the two autos collided head-on," Lt Gregg told the NewsSource. The collision occurred near the intersection with Middle Creek Road. Although Ballinger was not injured, McCarter and his passenger, Chloe McKinney, 17, of the same address were both flown to the Knoxville facility by medical helicopter. McKinney reportedly sustained only bruising and was released from the hospital. McCarter has sever fractures to both legs and is in serious condition at UT. Ballinger faces charges of failure to exercise due care and failure to maintain her lane.
