Haslam defends his Syrian refugee position Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam is defending his decision to request that the federal government temporarily halt the flow of Syrian refugees to Tennessee. On Monday Haslam said residents of the state are concerned about their safety following the recent bombings in Paris and elsewhere, and as a result he's doing everything he can to protect the state. He also said after studying the current screening process that is in place, he believes it is “a pretty good process”. The governor says he has received mixed reaction to his request with some, thanking him "for saving us" and others criticizing him as “cold and heartless” since he asked President Barack Obama to suspend the settlement of Syrian refugees in Tennessee . Haslam said he is most concerned about the safety and security of Tennesseans.
