Trucker dies in Cocke County crash A North Carolina man died Monday afternoon when his tractor trailer load of logs went out of control on Highway 73 in Cocke County during a heavy rain storm. Trooper Erik Raines identified the victim of the 3:30 pm crash as Raymond Button, 73, Waynesville, North Carolina, who was driving for Powell Industries of Waynesville. The incident occurred near the Mantooth Hills Road intersection. A witness told Trooper Raines that the 1993 Freightliner began to swerve as it traveled southbound. "The trailer went off the right side, the driver was able to get the rig back onto the roadway. The trailer began swerving again and hit the ditch a second time but after going into the ditch a third time, the rig rolled on it's right side," the trooper told the NewsSource. Trooper Raines pointed out that the driver was wearing a seat belt but that did not make a difference because the logs slid through the metal barrier behind the cab and then intruded into the cab itself, pinning the victim inside. The victim died at the scene and it was nearly an hour till personnel with the Cocke County Fire Department, Cosby Volunteer Fire Department, Newport Rescue Squad, Cocke County Sheriff's Department and First Call EMS could free the body.
