Brown pleads to theft
A Cocke County man who delivered mail in Hamblen County in 2014, pleaded guilty Monday in federal court to a theft charge. Willard Robert Brown, 39, Newport, entered the plea before Judge Ronnie Greer in U.S. District Court in Greeneville. At the time of the thefts, Brown was a contractor with the Postal Service and was responsible for delivering mail in the Russellville community. Asst. U.S. Attorney J. Christian Lampe said in December, 2014, the Postal Service initiated an investigation into five missing parcels in Bulls Gap and two missing parcels in Russellville. Investigators found that several Wal-Mart gift cards were not received by the intended recipients, and they also learned that Brown had used four of the gift cards during a single transaction at the Newport Wal-Mart in January, 2015. Brown later admitted taking the cards around Christmas, 2014. The plea agreement provides that Brown faces up to five years in prison and a fine up to $250,000, when he is sentenced in May.
