Abortion poll
A new poll of registered voters shows Tennessee residents with opposing views on abortion, they oppose more abortion regulations. And those in favor of them, think stricter abortion regulations alone will not reduce the number of abortions. Those are the findings of a a new Middle Tennessee State University telephone poll released Wednesday. Thirty-six percent of those polled said abortion should be legal in most or all cases, while 56 percent said abortion should be illegal in most or all cases. "Opposition to legal abortion in most or all cases remains the highest among self-described evangelical Christians, especially those who are also Republicans," said Dr. Ken Blake, director of the poll. A follow-up question asked what would be most likely to reduce the number of abortions: stricter abortion regulations,or more access to birth control sex education 8 percent said stricter abortion restrictions. 37 percent said more access to birth control and sex education. 39 percent chose both. 11 percent chose neither. "Both sides think stricter abortion regulation alone would not be the most effective way to cut the number of abortions performed, and both sides think the most effective way would at least include, if not rely mainly on, more access to birth control and sex education," Blake said. "Obviously, though, considerable disagreement remains over whether the best approach includes or excludes stricter abortion regulations."
