Watts Bar...an expensive nuclear plant
The first new U.S. nuclear power plant to be built in the 21st century may end up costing $200 million more than what was budgeted last year and nearly double the projected price tag forecast when work resumed on the mothballed plant nearly nine years ago. Under construction for 43 years, the Watts Bar Nuclear Power Plant should be completed and generating power by June.. The Unit 2 reactor at the Watts Bar Nuclear Plant, is expected to cost $4.7 billion since work was re-statrted on the pressurized reactor in 2007. TVA disclosed the higher price today in its quarterly earnings report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Mike Skaggs, the project manager, said that flood prevention steps required to be taken after the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown in Japan five years ago added more than $320 million to the cost of the new reactor.
