Proposed Rocky Top Trail
The Cherokee National Forest is seeking comment on a proposed Rocky Top Trail project. District Ranger Leslie Morgan says the proposed trail in the Edwina community of Cocke County would be approximately one-mile long, roughly parrelling Rocky Top Road. “The trail would be hand constructed and a foot travel trail only,” says Ranger Morgan. The proposed trail was brought to the forest service staff several years ago by a local citizen who enjoyed the views from the road, of both the French Broad Valley and of the Smokies. Plans call for hikers to park at Rocky Top Gap, hike the trail to the top, and then walk back to the Gap. Ranger Morgan says there would be minimal construction on the ridgetop, and no mature trees would be removed as part of the trail construction. An archaeologist will evaluate possible impacts to heritage resources, and impacts on plants and wildlife will be addressed in a biological assessment. Those wishing to comment on the proposal should contact the Unaka District office at 4900 Asheville Highway, Greeneville, or email to; comments-southern-cherokee-nolichucky-unaka@fs.fed.us.
