School voucher bill delayed
The House sponsor of a bill to create a school voucher system in Tennessee delayed a floor vote Monday evening after nearly two dozen amendments were proposed at the last minute, and because a number of supporters were absent. The bill would take state funding from struggling schools and use it for tuition at private schools, adding to the financial dilemma of the public school system. Educators argue that a better way to address the issue would be for the state to assist school systems that are struggling. House Minority Leader Democrat Craig Fitzhugh said some of proposed amendments "would’ve made a terrible bill a little better but not good enough to vote for it." Some observers believe the move to delay was necessary because of the absence of some lawmakers who have been supportive of the legislation.
