Two charged with bilking Lakeway Pallet
Two Hamblen County residents were taken into custody Thursday in a recent conspiracy to bilk Lakeway Pallet in Newport of thousands of dollars. Cocke County Detective Lt. C.J. Ball said the men came to the pallet company saying they had returned pallets, which the firm purchases for $2.00 each, when in fact they had not returned pallets. The fraudulent activity stretched from November, 2015 till January of this year. Matthew David Covington, 26, Fish Hatchery Road, Morristown, allegedly collected a total of $9,518 in fraudulent payments. He is charged with two counts theft over $1,000 and two counts theft over $500. James Dale Allen Calfee, 22, Sulphur Springs Road, Morristown, is charged with theft over $1,000 and theft over $500. He allegedly collected $1,952 in payments to which he was not entitled.
