Appalachian Regional Commission survives budget cut
The Appalachian Regional Commission will continue, following an effort in the US Senate to defund the entity which pumps money into needed projects in the Appalachian region such as the current effort to put water to the Grassy Fork Elementary school. The Senate last week refused by a vote of 25-71, to eliminate $200 million in fiscal 2017 funding for the Appalachian Regional Commission, the Delta Regional Authority, the Northern Border Regional Commission and the Denali Commission. The effort was to defund the multi-state compacts that receive federal economic-development and antipoverty grants. Both Tennessee Republican senators, Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker voted against the move to defund the agency.
