Attempted carjacking
A Cocke County woman says she was the victim of an attempted carjacking Saturday night. Danielle Michelle Hance of Early Road, Newport told Deputy David Moriarty that the incident occurred at 10:25 p.m. at after she stopped at the intersection of Highway 411 and West Highway 25/70. The 21 year-old Hance told officers she was on her way home from work when while stopped at the intersection, a white male wearing a dark hoodie and pants, jumped into her car on the passenger side. The unidentified male told the driver to take him to the Terrace Apartments in Newport. Hance said she told the man he could have her car if he would let her out and not hurt her. But the intruder told her, she was going to drive him to the apartment complex. When the driver looked at the male in an attempt to get a description of him, "and at that time he slammed her face into the steering wheel, busting her lip and causing bruising to her face," the officer said. As she drive through town, the victim says she tried to text a friend to contact 911, but the male grabbed her phone and threw it out the window on Main Street. Officers however were unable to find the phone. As she entered the apartment complex, Hance says she stopped, jumped from the car and drove away. The male chased her, but the woman says she was able to elude him and run to the home of a friend. Officers were unable to locate the carjacker. Hance said she returned to the car to find the engine was still running however the male had pulled the keys from the ignition.
