Coty Trent Webb, 25, Tanasi Drive, Newport allegedly confined his girlfriend, to their home for several days while armed with a knife. During the episode, Webb allegedly threatened repeatedly to kill the woman and her unborn child while holding the knife to her neck and stomach. According to the warrant, Webb forced his victim to get on her knees and beg for her life, and also forced her to write a two-page suicide note. The defendant then filled a bathtub in the couples home and forced his would-be victim to stand in the water saying "it would be less mess if he killed her this way," according to investigators. Webb also allegedly used a clothes hanger in his attempt to force a miscarriage, and as a result was charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping, aggravated rape, Attempt to Procure criminal miscarriage, Attempted First Degree Murder of an Unborn Child and aggravated assault. Prosecutor Tonya Thornton told Judge Ben Hooper the plea agreement provides for Webb to plead guilty to aggravated assault and the balance of the charges were dismissed. He was given an eight year sentence as a Range II offender meaning 35 percent of the sentence must be served before the defendant is eligible for parole. The agreement is a "best interest" plea Public Defender Keith Haas told the court. Thornton said the case involved very serious charges "but There are extenuating circumstances in every case. He voluntarily agreed to be sentenced as a Range II offender. Webb was given an eight year sentence, but released on the time he has already served, with the balance on probation. Thornton said the victim approved of the negotiated plea. As a part of the plea, Webb will have no contact with the victim and must attend a one-day neonatal abstinence syndrome class.
