US House moves to restrict free school meals
Currently Cocke County students receive free meals at school, but a US House committee wants to reduce the school systems that qualify for free and reduced meals. Republicans on the Education and Workforce Committee backed the bill, want to scale back the number of schools in which all students receive free or reduced-price meals. The measure would set up a pilot program providing block grants for school meals in three states. Those states would no longer receive unlimited federal dollars for students who qualify for the free and reduced-price lunches, and states would not have to follow federal nutrition requirements. The legislation would also eliminate some healthier school nutrition rules promoted by first lady Michelle Obama. Some schools say they are too restrictive and the healthier meals are not appetizing enough to students. Republicans say the changes would help redirect money to other programs while ensuring that those with the highest need are still guaranteed meals. But hunger and nutrition advocates from the American Academy of Pediatrics to the American Heart Association are critical of the legislation, saying it could mean some children will go hungry at school. The bill would raise the threshold for a government program called community eligibility, in which schools in districts with high poverty rates can provide free meals to all students at the school.
