Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride
More than 700 motorcycles traveled through Newport on Sunday as a part of the annual Smoky Mountain Thunder Memorial Ride. Newport Chief of Police Maurice Shults said the Memorial Day weekend event is a tribute who those veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice. The ride began at the Sevier County courthouse with a short ceremony and then the cycles made the 40 mile trip to the Veteran's Overlook on Clinch Mountain in Grainger County. Chief Shults said law enforcement provided escort and blocked traffic along the route, which was lined with flag waving onlookers. A Newport Fire Department hook and ladder truck held a flag over the procession as it traveled from West Highway 25/70, onto Highway 25E, just before noon on Sunday.
