Tyker Sisk drowning
An autopsy has been ordered in the Saturday drowning death of a Cocke County teenager. The 4:00 pm incident occurred in a small rock dredging operation on Pappys Way, off O'Neil Road. The victim was identified as 14 year-old Tyler Sisk, who lived near the dredging site. Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes said Sisk was with a friend, Caden Copeland, 13, Mantooth Road, when the incident occurred. Copeland told Deputy Hollis Emmons that that the two were walking in water which had accumulated in a small quarry which was being dredged for river rock and sand. the boys were walking together in knee deep water which was very muddy and limited visibility. "While walking both boys reached a point in the quarry where there was a very deep drop off unknown to them and both boys went under water," the sheriff said. "Both boys struggled to reach the surface and shallow water, and while (Copeland) managed to reach the shallow portion of the water, he was unable to locate the victim who had gone under water". Copeland ran to the nearby Sisk home and 911 was called. Emergency responders arrived on scene to find adults, including the victim's father James Sisk, in the water searching for the teen. Deputy Logan Starritt, Cocke County Fire Department Personnel, and First Call EMS personnel entered the water in search of the victim. The Newport Rescue Squad also was called to assist. After approximately 45 minutes, First Call Paramedic Jason Boatright located the unresponsive victim in seven feet of water near a steep drop off as the witness had described, according to Deputy Emmons. "The paramedic had to dive deep under water to recover the victim. Cocke County firefighters and Deputy Staritt assisted in removing the victim from the water at 4:45 pm," the sheriff said.. Emergency personnel including a Lifestar crew member attempted to resuscitate the victim as the medical helicopter waited nearby in the field. According to the victim's family and Copeland, the victim did not know how to swim. Deputy Emmons added that the dredging operation had no barricades or "no trespassing "signs . The sheriff said the investigation is ongoing and "our thoughts and prayers are continuing for all those affected by this tragedy."
