Weapons incidents
Newport and Cocke County authorities are investigating three incidents involving weapons reported on Tuesday and this morning. Newport Patrol Officer Justin Johnson says James Duncan, Eighth Street, Newport reports another resident of his home pulled a weapon on him on Tuesday and demanded Duncan's gun. The suspect who appeared high on drugs, was given the 9 mm weapon, valued at $212,and he then fled out the door. Tommy Barnes, 41, Lindsey Gap Road, Cosby, was jailed by Deputy Lt. Steve Johnson after he allegedly pulled a pocket knife and held it to the throat of his wife Angela. The incident occurred following an argument. The suspect fled after the incident and after two hours of searching this morning, he was found in Phillips Cemetery off Trail Hollow Road by Sgt. Bob Schaff and Deputy Max laughter. Mr. Barnes was found hiding in trees and holding the knife to his arm.After he refused commands to drop the knife, Barnes was tasered, and he dropped the weapon. First Call EMS responded to the cemetery to administer medical assistance and Barnes then was jailed on charges of aggravated domestic assault and resisting arrest. Tuesday evening, authorities responded to a domestic incident on Paintbrush Way in Newport. Deputy David Moriarty was told that William Jones, 53, Enduro Way put a knife to the throat of Fred Green, who resides at the Paintbrush Way address. When Amy Allison attempted to intervene, Jones placed his hands on her and told her to not get involved. Ms. Allison was able to escape and she contacted authorities. Jones was taken into custody on charges of aggravated assault and public intoxication, and a pocketknife was recovered from the suspect.
