Webb receives state resolution
The Cocke County Partnership Chamber Connection held it's monthly luncheon on Wednesday. Eleventh District Representative Jeremy Faison (R-Cosby) took the opportunity to present Gay Webb a resolution passed by the state House and Senate in his honor. It recognizes Webb for his hard work over several decades, to clean up Cocke County and in particular, the Pigeon River . Webb is a founding member of the Dead Pigeon River Council as well as Keep Cocke County Beautiful. Faison said the resolution was passed after Webb was honored with the "Love where you Live" award from the Keep Tennessee Beautiful organization, earlier this year. "Gay has been working for decades to see a cleaner Pigeon River and I have a tremendous respect for him. The thing you can tell about a person's character is that they don't give up. Mr. Webb has never given up and that's why I have such respect for him" Faison said. The state representative said Webb's work to stop the pollution of the river by Blue Ridge Paper Company "is like David facing the polluter's Goliath." Webb in expressing appreciation for the recognition, said he recently say four eagles at Rankin Bottoms on Douglas Lake. He said the restoration of wildlife on the lake stems from a cleanup of the river. He also pointed to the large revenues to the county as a result of whitewater rafting on the river. "But we need to bring (Blue Ridge) into compliance with the 1972 Clean Water Act. If we do our property taxes will go down as whitewater rafting doubles in the next few years. That river belongs to Cocke County" argued Web.
