Hill arrest
A Newport woman was jailed Wednesday night after she was allegedly observed falling asleep as she drive on Main Street in downtown Newport. Deputy Justin Johnson said Betty Hill, 47,Blue Ridege Way, Newport, was again observed nodding off at the wheel after she stopped near the Newport Police Department. When officers arrived, hill sped away at a high rate of speed, turned onto North Street, and drove for some distance with one wheel on the sidewalk, as she crossed the Pigeon River.After she stopped and was found to ge asleep at the wheel, ms. Hill was asked to exit her car. When she did, the vehicle rolled back, stopping only after it hit the officer's cruiser. The defendant was in possession of straws with white residue, Alprazolam, Oxycodone, Gabapentine and another bottle of pills prescribed to another individual. During a subsequent search of the defendant at the Cocke County Jail, Hill was found to have marijuana in her underwear. Now she is charged with DUI, possession of the schedule drugs, introduction of contraband into the jail, no insurance , failure to maintain her lane, no insurance, and a registration violation.
