Drowning victim recovered
The TWRA had reported Saturday that the search was continuing for a man who drowned Tuesday of last week in Douglas Lake, but Jefferson County Sheriff GW "Bud" McCoig says just as searchers were preparing to end the search for the day, the body of the victim was recovered. McCoig said the body of 74 year-old John King, Englewood Fla. who also has a home on Scenic Shores Drive in Dandridge, was found just before 6 p.m. "Jefferson County Rescue Squad recovered the body in 38 feet of water, and it was taken to Jefferson Memotial Hospital. An autopsy has been ordered," the sheriff said. King had been on board a pontoon boat near Henderson Island on Douglas Lake about one mile downstream from Dandridge, and the body was recovered nearby. According to witnesses, three children were swimming near the boat when the wind began to separate the boat from them at about 11:30 a.m.. Mr. King exited the boat by way of the ladder and swam to assist the children, all of whom were wearing life jackets. Upon reaching the children, Mr. King began to struggle. Although one of the children attempted to help him, King went under and never resurfaced. The victim was not wearing a life jacket. Often in warm weather, a drowning victim will resurface sooner than four days, however Sheriff McCoig said a number of factors influence the length of time before a body will surface. "It depends on what the victim has eaten, and how much gas is in the body. It can take five to ten days, and sometimes in deeper water it can take two weeks for a body to re-surface," according to McCoig.
