Motorcycle fatality
A Knoxville Tatoo artist died Sunday morning when his motorcycle left westbound I-40 in Cocke County, and struck the guardrail near the 433 mile marker. Trooper John Woods identified the victim as Brent Cunningham, 36, who was operating a 2007 Yamaha while being pursued by a Newport police officer. He said the cyclist was negotiating a curve when he struck the guardrail at a high rate of speed. Newport Chief of Police Maurice Shults said the pursuit began when Patrol Officer Joshyua Shults clocked the cyclist at 64 miles per hour in a 40 mile zone in the Bryant Town section of the Cosby Road at 3:30 a.m. The report by Trooper Woods indicates the cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, had been drinking and possibly using drugs prior to the crash, and a test has been ordered. Chief Shults said the officer pursued Cunningham from the Cosby Highway, onto the interstate and to the crash scene for a duration of one minute 18 seconds.
