Abortion ruling could affect Tennessee In a ruling that could have direct implications for Tennessee abortion restrictions, the U.S. Supreme Court has struck down Texas' regulations which sought to make it more difficult for a woman to obtain an abortion. The justices voted 5-3 Monday in favor of the Texas clinics that had argued the regulations were a thinly veiled attempt to make it harder for women to get an abortion . The court held that the restrictive regulations are medically unnecessary and unconstitutionally limit a woman's right to an abortion. Texas had argued the regulations were needed to protect women's health. The rules required doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals and forced clinics to meet hospital-like standards for outpatient surgery. Tennessee has two similar laws which likely will be thrown out as a result of Monday's ruling. Both laws were challenged in federal court in 2015 by three Tennessee clinics, but the U.S. District Court in Nashville agreed to stay proceedings in the case in September, until the Supreme Court ruled on the Texas challenge.
