Purkey injured in crash
A Cocke County man was injured Tuesday morning in a three vehicle crash on South Highway 321, near the Cosby School. Trooper Ronnie Hall said Kevin Miller, Columbia, South Carolina was leaving the Dollar General store just after 6 a.m when his tractor trailer was struck. Nicholas Purkey, 36, Haney Branch Road, Newport was southbound in a 1991 Nissan pickup when he ran under the trailer of the Miller rig. A 2002 Ford Escape operated by Deborah Hatheway, 30, Yonkers Way, Cosby, traveling behind the Purkey vehicle, swerved to miss the crash but struck the rear of the pickup. Although Miller was uninjured, Purkey and Hatheway were taken by First Call EMS to the Newport Medical Center. Purkey later was transferred to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville where today he is in stable condition. Two children in the Hatheway auto were uninjured. Trooper Hall said charges may be filed against Purkey, pending the results of a toxicology report. The Cosby Highway was closed and traffic was detoured, for approximately 90 minutes.
