Jones arrest
A Cocke County man faces a number of charges following the Tuesday afternoon seizure of marijuana and weapons from his residence on Dry Fork Road in the Del Rio community. Cocke County Sheriff Armando Fontes said narcotics agents from his department were assisted by agents with the Governor's Task Force on Marijuana Eradication in the arrest. A helicopter with the state agency conducted a fly-over at the residence of Connie Ray Jones, 56, and spotted the suspect "come out of his residence and he was observed pulling plants out of planting pots surrounding his residence", the sheriff said. The helicopter pilot contacted eradication agents on the ground and officers made contact with Jones, who was found hiding in a wooded area, in a marijuana patch which was on his property. Drug Agent David Robertson said 46 marijuana plants were growing near the Jones home, with a water hose running from the home to the growing plants. A subsequent search of the property resulted in the confiscation of 12 firearms and ammunition from the home. Sheriff Fontes said Jones admitted to officers the plants, firearms, and ammunition were his. In addition, the officers located three bags with green leafy material believed to be marijuana, inside the home. Jones reportedly has a history of felony conviction for possession of marijuana for resale, and an arrest history which includes, possession of schedule IV and VI, possession of drug paraphernalia, evading arrest, and the sale and manufacture of marijuana. The defendant currently is charged with possession of marijuana, felon in possession of a firearm (12 counts) and cultivation of marijuana. Jones now is free on a $75,000.00 bond. The sheriff expressed his appreciation to Governor Bill Haslam for his assistance in providing manpower and equipment to combat the drug issues affecting many Cocke County families.
