Ferris wheel accident update
Mountain States’ Hospital officials have confirmed that 6-year-old Briley Reynolds has been discharged from Niswonger Children’s Hospital. Jason and Kimmie Reynolds saw their daughters fall, one-by-one, from a Ferris wheel at the Greene County Fair on Aug. 8. Ms. Reynolds said 10-year-old Kayla was alert after the fall, but 6-year-old Briley appeared lifeless on the ground. Doctors said she sustained a traumatic brain injury. Family Attractions Amusement, the Georgia-based operator of the ride, did not re-open any of its rides after the girls’ fall; inspectors reported the incident was likely caused by mechanical failure. “How can you not be (angry)? ... This could have been prevented. (It) very well could have been prevented if someone would have just taken the time to look over the ride and really, truly inspect it,” Kimmie Reynolds said during a news conference.. In Tennessee, amusement ride inspections are done by third parties before permits are issued annually. Mike Neighbors of James H. Drew Exposition, which has the rides at the Cocke County Fair said the amusement rides are thoroughly inspected. “We set the equipment and they do a complete inspection of all the equipment. Our employees, supervisors and foreman do a pre-fair inspection. Then we turn around and the operators do a daily inspection,” Neighbors said. He said several Drew Exposition employees are certified by the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials, including himself.
