Martin and Lovell arrest
Two Cocke County men were taken into custody Thursday evening following a pursuit by Newport officers which ended in a crash. Patrol Officer William Garber said he say Martin Ball, 44, Piney Mountain Road, Newport run a stop sign on East Broadway. He attempted a traffic stop but the 2001 Ford Taurus fled onto Highway 73, passing cars on the double yellow line, and traveling at a high rate of speed. After a chase of more than two miles, Martin attempted a sharp turn into a private drive. But his car went out of control, went airborne and came to rest on the embankment. While being treated at the scene by First Call EMS personnel, Martin was found to be clutching methamphetamine and Oxycodone in his fist. The driver was jailed on charges of violation of a traffic control device, no insurance, improper passing, failure to yield, reckless driving, two counts possession of schedule II drugs, and felony evading arrest by motor vehicle. His passenger, Richard Lovell, 56, Fairfield Drive, Newport was taken into custody on a community corrections violation.
