Newport School board candidates
The candidate qualifying period ended Thursday for three City of Newport school board positions that will be on the ballot November 8. Cocke County Elections Administrator Josh Blanchard said the three incumbents have qualified to run for re-election for the at-large, four-year terms: Charlotte J. Mims, Michael Overholt, and Linda Powell. No one else picked up a petition to qualify as a candidate. Local boards of education have staggered terms of office by state law. The other two city school board positions will be elected in 2018 when the entire city council and the city mayor also will be on the ballot.
