Newport Planning Commission recommends amendment of R-1 zoning restrictions
Members of the Newport Planning Commission have agreed to recommend that the city council amend the current regulations regarding apartments in R-1 zoned areas. Currently apartments in R-1 are restricted to duplexes, however Terry Taylor wants to put a tri-plex on Hawkins Street. He told the board that he plans three one-bedroom apartments, because they are currently the most popular in Newport. Planning Advisor Dan Hawk said he believes the city council should consider a modification of the zoning because "this is something that would be beneficial to the community in the future." Hawk said the land size at the planned site is adequate for the three units. "Affordable housing is becoming more and more unattainable," he told the board. The city council is expected to take up the amendment on first reading, at it's September meeting.
