Drug firms fight efforts to control drug abuse Tennessee lawmakers from Northeast Tennessee received more than $52,000 in campaign contributions from pharmaceutical companies and associated groups who have participated in the Pain Care Forum. The forum is a coalition of drug companies and others who spent millions of dollars across the country to block policies aimed at curbing opioid abuse, according to recent data . The research shows the makers of prescription painkillers developed a national plan that includes hundreds of lobbyists and millions in campaign contributions to kill laws aimed at controlling the abuse of prescription opioids, Those pills have led to a crisis that claimed the lives of 165,000 Americans their lives and led to the addition of millions more.
