Cocke Legislative Body
Members of the Cocke County Legislative Body agreed to give a piece of property on Frog Pond Alley to Habitate for Humanity, and to sell other parcels on White Oak Avenue and on Woodlawn Avenue to the non-profit for $1,500 each. Delinquent Tax Attorney Jeff Green said the White Oak site has a falling down home with a large tree on the residence. There was little interest in the property on which $14,000 in taxes are owed. A total of $1,552 in delinquent taxes are owed on the Woodlawn site. Green said the move to sell the properties must have the approval of the Newport City Council. Mayor Crystal Ottinger said state officials have opined that the property can be sold for a nominal fee or given, to a charitable organization. The body also approved the sale of six acres on Looney Road in Parrottsville for $6,600. A total of $6,400 in taxes and interest are owed on the property. Greene will advertise the site for two weeks in an effort to obtain a higher bid. After hearing from District Attorney General Jimmy Dunn, the body agreed to apply for a Victim Coordinator grant. Dunn said the 80/20 grant program would provide for a General Sessions Court victim coordinator. The prosecutor said the coordinator would be a county employee, housed and supervised in his office, if the grant is approved. County Mayor Crystal Ottinger said the grant would provide $52,000 annually, with the county furnishing $13,000. Dunn said supplying supervision, training and office space would be an in-kind match. The commission also re-elected Clay Blazer as Chair and elected Love Henderson as vice-chair.
