Cocke County Circuit Court
Two former employees of the Cocke County Jail were arraigned Monday in Cocke County Circuit Court before Judge Ben Hooper. Autumn Davis,43, a former jail nurse and Corrections Officer Shayelan Scheffers, 22, were arrested earlier this month following an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. They are charged with a conspiracy to obtain oxycodone and hydrocodone by fraud, in the jail. Davis also is charged with the theft of jail equipment valued at more than $1,000. Both defendants are to enter a plea to the charges on December 6. McKinley Cody, 19,along with his mother former E911 Director Kathy Cody Williams,52, were arraigned on charges they conspired with other to smuggle suboxone into the Cocke County Jail. The drug allegedly was intended for Cody who is being held on charges he killed Lora Costner, 42, who went missing in January, but who's body was not recovered until March. Cody is charged with First degree Murder, Second Degree Murder, Robbery, and Abuse of a Corpse in that case. Judge Hooper announced that Sevierville attorney James Hickman has been appointed to represent Cody on all the charges. Another defendant in the suboxone conspiracy, Montana Boyer,32, Turner Ridge Road,Newport was arraigned and then pleaded guilty to the introduction of contraband into the jail. She was placed on two years of supervised probation. The court denied a request by Jason Alverez, 34, Parrotts Ridge Road, Parrottsville who is charged with seven counts of the sale and delivery of heroin, to go to a drug rehab facility. Judge Hooper pointed to the lengthy criminal record of the defendant. William Orville Anders, 44, Four Oaks Way, White Pine, pleaded guilty to three counts of aggravated statutory rape as well as contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Charges of sexual battery by an authority figure and solicitation of a minor were dismissed as a part of the plea agreement. The victim allegedly was between 13 and 18 years of age. Anders was given a nine year sentence, will serve one year on work release and the balance will be on supervised probation. He will register as a sex offender and have no contact with the victim. Charges against Valerie Yvonne Ogle, 42,Highway 321, Newport, were dismissed at the request of Asst. DA Tonya Thornton. Ogle was charged with aggravated child abuse/neglect and endangerment involving a 12 year-old special needs child, who has a number of medical issues. Thornton said the dismissal was requested because "I don't think we could have proved guilt beyond a reasonable doubt."
