Brooks case sent to grand jury A Cocke County man who is charged with killing his girlfriend on July 18th, has been bound to the Cocke County Grand Jury and the identity of his victim has been released. Alfred Brooks, Jr, 45, held law officers at bay for several hours after the shooting, necessitating the deployment of the Newport/Cocke County and Morristown SWAT teams. After being taken into custody at his Upper Bison Road, Newport home, Brooks was charged with First Degree Murder and the Manufacture of Marijuana. He remains in custody without bond During a preliminary hearing before Cocke County General Sessions Judge Brad Davidson, the name of the victim, Suzanne Renee Perez was released. She was 52 years old. At 10:36 pm the night of the incident, Barbara Hawk, a neighbor of the suspect said that Brooks had contacted her by phone and to say that he shot and killed his girlfriend. Hawk said her son, Chuck Hawk went to the residence and found the victim was dead and Brooks was angry and making threats. The subject was armed with several guns and said he planned on shooting law enforcement officers when they approached his residence. Sheriff Armondo Fontes said Brooks had wanted a 'suicide by cop' encounter, however after the SWAT teams arrived Brooks calmed down and surrendered peacefully. The female victim was found with an apparent single gun shot to the face., covered with a blanket. At the scene Brooks gave a statement to Cocke County Detective Lt. Robert Thornton in which he said, he and Perez had been drinking. She slapped him on the face and so he said he was going to bed. He said the victim came into the bedroom and called him a derogatory name. "I grabbed my .357 off the night stand , went into the living room and shot her in the f.... face," Brooks said. Officers obtained consent to search the property and found several weapons and several flower pots around the residence containing 28 marijuana plants. Sheriff Fontes said Tuesday that he still has not been able to locate the victim's family.
